Why your Shopify store gets visitors but no sales

The most common reasons shoppers leave without buying, and practical fixes you can make this week.

Traffic without sales is one of the most frustrating stages of running an online store. The good news is that the reasons are usually fixable. Work through these common causes one by one.

1. Shipping costs surprise people at checkout

Unexpected shipping costs are one of the most common reasons shoppers abandon carts. If customers only discover delivery costs at the final step, many will leave.

Fix: show shipping information early, on product pages or in a banner. Make sure rates are fair for where customers live. Our guide to Shopify shipping rates in South Africa explains how.

2. Your product pages don't answer key questions

If a shopper can't quickly find the size, material, delivery time or returns policy, they'll hesitate, and often leave.

Fix: add clear details, sizing guides and delivery estimates, and link your returns policy near the "Add to cart" button.

3. Your photos don't sell the product

Blurry, dark or inconsistent photos make a store look untrustworthy.

Fix: use clean, well-lit photos, show the product from several angles, and include at least one photo of it in use.

4. The store doesn't feel trustworthy

New stores have to earn trust. Missing contact details, no reviews and a generic look all make shoppers cautious.

Fix: show a real contact email or WhatsApp number, add reviews as you get them, include an About page, and make your policies easy to find.

5. Your store is slow on mobile

Most shoppers browse on their phones. A slow store loses them before they even see your products.

Fix: compress images, remove unused apps, and test your store on a phone using mobile data, not just Wi-Fi.

6. The checkout has friction

Too many steps, forced account creation or limited payment options all cost you sales.

Fix: allow guest checkout, offer the payment methods your customers prefer (like instant EFT alongside cards), and test the full checkout yourself.

7. You're attracting the wrong visitors

Sometimes the store is fine, but the traffic isn't. Ads aimed too broadly or social posts that don't match your products bring people who were never going to buy.

Fix: check where your traffic comes from in Shopify Analytics, and focus on the channels that bring buyers, not just visitors.

The bottom line

Visitors leaving without buying is a signal, not a dead end. Fix the obvious friction first: shipping surprises, unclear product pages, trust and mobile speed. Then measure again.
