How to choose a Shopify theme (and when to customise it)

What to look for in a Shopify theme, free vs paid, and when custom theme work is worth the investment.

Your theme controls how your store looks and, just as importantly, how fast it loads and how easy it is to buy from. Here's how to choose well.

Free vs paid themes

Shopify's free themes are well built, fast and regularly updated. For many new stores, a free theme is a great starting point.

Paid themes from the Shopify Theme Store offer more built-in features and layouts, which can save on custom development. Only buy themes from the official Theme Store, where they're reviewed by Shopify, rather than from unknown marketplaces.

What to check before you choose

Speed. Preview the theme's demo store on your phone. If it feels slow there, it'll feel slow for your customers.

Mobile experience. Most South African shoppers browse on mobile. Check the menu, product pages and cart on a phone, not just on desktop.

Features you actually need. Make a short list: product filters, size guides, colour swatches, mega menus. Choose a theme that does these well, rather than one with dozens of features you'll never use.

Fits your catalogue size. A theme designed for a single hero product looks very different to one designed for hundreds of products.

Ongoing updates and support. Check when it was last updated and how the developer handles support.

Don't judge by the demo photos

Theme demos use beautiful professional photos. Imagine the theme with your own products and photos. Sometimes a simpler layout makes ordinary photos look better.

When to customise

Start with what the theme gives you. Customise when you hit a real limit, for example:

  • A section you need that the theme doesn't offer
  • A specific layout for your product pages
  • Brand details that make your store look distinct
  • Features that would otherwise need several apps

Good custom work lives inside your theme as proper sections you can edit yourself, rather than one-off code that breaks when the theme updates.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Switching themes repeatedly instead of improving one
  • Installing apps to do what a small theme change could do
  • Editing theme code directly without a backup or a duplicate theme

The bottom line

Choose a fast, mobile-friendly theme that fits your catalogue, start simple and customise only when you have a clear reason.
