Shipping is one of the biggest reasons South African customers abandon their carts, and one of the most common places stores quietly lose money. Getting your rates right protects both your conversions and your margins.
Why shipping is tricky in South Africa
Courier costs vary a lot depending on where a parcel is going. Delivering within a major metro is usually cheaper and faster than delivering to a small town or rural area. A single flat rate can't reflect that.
Your three main options
1. Flat rate
One price for every order, everywhere.
- Pros: simple, easy for customers to understand
- Cons: you overcharge customers in cities (and lose sales) and undercharge remote deliveries (and lose money)
2. Zone-based rates
Different prices for different areas, for example main centres, regional areas and outlying areas.
- Pros: fairer for customers, protects your margins
- Cons: Shopify's built-in zones work by country and province, not by individual postal code, so getting it accurate within South Africa needs extra setup
3. Live courier rates
Rates calculated at checkout based on the customer's address.
- Pros: the most accurate pricing
- Cons: usually needs an app or courier integration
How SmartShip ZA helps
We built SmartShip ZA because we kept seeing this problem on South African stores. It classifies every South African postal code into Main, Regional and Outlying zones and shows the right rate and delivery estimate at checkout automatically. It also gives you a dashboard to book couriers, track parcels and print waybills after the sale.
Tips for any shipping setup
- Set accurate product weights. Rates based on weight are only as good as the weights you enter.
- Show delivery estimates. "2 to 4 business days" builds trust and reduces "where's my order?" emails.
- Consider a free shipping threshold. For example, free delivery over a certain order value. It can lift your average order size.
- Test with real postal codes. Try a metro, a regional town and a remote area before launch.
The bottom line
A single flat rate is easy but rarely fair. Zone-based or live rates charge customers what delivery actually costs, which keeps both city shoppers and your margins happy.
