Google Business Profile: the quickest win for local SA businesses

22 June 2026·5 min read

If you serve customers in a specific area, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, or any South African town, Google Business Profile is the single fastest thing you can do to start appearing in local search results.

What is Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the listing that appears on the right side of Google when someone searches for your business by name, or in the map results when someone searches for a service near them.

It shows your business name, address, phone number, opening hours, photos, and reviews. It's free and takes about 30 minutes to set up properly.

Why it matters

When someone searches "plumber Cape Town" or "accountant near me", Google shows a map with three local businesses at the top before the regular website results. This is called the Local Pack. Getting into this section can drive significant enquiries even if your website doesn't rank well yet.

How to set it up

Go to business.google.com and create or claim your listing. You'll need to verify your business, usually by receiving a postcard at your business address or by phone verification.

Once verified, complete every section:

  • Business name, address, and phone number (must match your website exactly)
  • Business category, choose the most specific one available
  • Opening hours
  • Website URL
  • A short, clear business description
  • At least 5 photos. Exterior, interior, team, and work examples
  • Getting reviews

Reviews are the most important ranking factor for local search. Ask every satisfied client to leave a Google review. Send them a direct link to your review page, don't make them search for it.

Five genuine reviews will put you ahead of most competitors in smaller SA towns. In Cape Town and Johannesburg, aim for 20+ to be competitive.

    Keep it updated

Update your Business Profile when your hours change, when you have new photos, or when you add a new service. Google favours active listings over dormant ones.
