Most South African businesses selling online end up choosing between three routes: their own Shopify store, their own WooCommerce (WordPress) store, or a marketplace like Takealot. Each has real strengths. Here's how they compare.
Shopify
Shopify is a hosted ecommerce platform. You pay a monthly fee and Shopify handles hosting, security, updates and the checkout.
Good for: businesses that want a professional store without managing servers or plugins, and want to grow over time.
Strengths:
- Very reliable checkout and hosting
- Huge app ecosystem for extra features
- Easy for non-technical owners to manage day to day
- Built to scale, from first sale to thousands of orders
Trade-offs:
- Monthly subscription, plus app costs
- Shopify Payments isn't available in South Africa, so you use a local gateway
WooCommerce
WooCommerce is a free plugin that turns a WordPress site into a store. You host it yourself.
Good for: businesses with an existing WordPress site and access to a developer.
Strengths:
- No platform subscription fee
- Full control over the code and data
- Huge range of plugins
Trade-offs:
- You're responsible for hosting, security, updates and backups
- Performance depends heavily on hosting and plugin choices
- Things break more often, and fixing them usually needs a developer
Takealot (and other marketplaces)
Takealot is South Africa's biggest online marketplace. You list your products and Takealot brings the customers.
Good for: reaching lots of buyers quickly without building your own audience.
Strengths:
- Instant access to a large, trusting customer base
- Fulfilment options that handle storage and delivery
Trade-offs:
- Commission and fees on every sale
- You don't own the customer relationship or their contact details
- You compete directly with other sellers on price, often on the same page
- Your brand is secondary to the marketplace's
So which should you choose?
It's not always either-or. A common, sensible path is:
- Build your own Shopify store as your home base, where you own your brand and your customer list.
- Use Takealot as an extra channel to reach more buyers and move stock.
- Bring repeat customers back to your own store, where your margins are better.
WooCommerce makes the most sense if you already run WordPress and have reliable developer support. Otherwise, Shopify is usually the lower-stress option for growing businesses.
The bottom line
Marketplaces rent you an audience; your own store builds one. Most growing brands end up needing both, with their own store at the centre.
